Join Writers Read for our second event of the 2024-2025 season: Dr. Amber Rose Johnson introducing Dr. Alexis Pauline Gumbs.

Dr. Alexis Pauline Gumbs, author of Survival Is a Promise: The Eternal Life of Audre Lorde, is a queer Black feminist love evangelist and an aspirational cousin to all life. Publisher’s Weekly calls her writing “groundbreaking.” They are also the author of four earlier books, aka portable textual ceremonies, including Undrowned which won the 2022 Whiting Award in Non-Fiction. A recipient of the Windham-Campbell Prize in Poetry, the National Endowment of the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship and a National Humanities Center Fellowship, Dr. Gumbs lives and loves in Durham, North Carolina.

Dr. Gumbs will be introduced by Dr. Amber Rose Johnston, a scholar, artist, and spacemaker from Providence, RI, who has recently relocated to Montreal and whose interdisciplinary practice explores experimental poetics and performance as critical methods for reconfiguring our worlds.

On November 11th, 2024 in room MB-09 at the John Molson Building (1600 De Maisonneuve Blvd. W.), Alexis Pauline Gumbs will join us to read from and discuss her newest book, Survival Is a Promise: The Eternal Life of Audre Lorde (2024). In Survival Is a Promise, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, the first researcher to explore the full depths of Lorde’s manuscript archives, illuminates the eternal life of Lorde. Her life and work become more than a sound bite; they become a cosmic force, teaching us the grand contingency of life together on earth.

This event is free and open to all. Register here.
