For our third event of the 2015/16 season, Concordia Writers Read is pleased to be hosting the acclaimed American poet, Major Jackson. He is the author of four collections of poetry: Leaving Saturn (University of Georgia, 2002), Hoops (W. W. Norton, 2006), Holding Company (W. W. Norton, 2010) and most recently, Roll Deep (W. W. Norton, 2015). His latest book is a lyrical exploration of war and human intimacy that transcends the confines of narrative voice, forcefully rumbling through familiar 21st-century spaces with an unapologetic brazenness, humour and skill.

Paula Meehan is the author of six collections of poetry, the most recent Painting Rain (2009), and has written plays for both adults and children, including Cell and The Wolf of Winter. She has received numerous awards for her work and was honoured with election to Aosdána, the Irish Academy for the Arts, in 1996. She is currently Ireland Professor of Poetry, 2013 to 2016. Meehan’s work is rich with influence from her origins in Dublin’s north inner city, sensually integrating folklore, mythology, and collective memory into writing that resonates back to the human condition in its purest form.

The West Coast poetry duo Dina del Bucchia and Daniel Zomparelli will be giving a reading to promote their new book, Rom Com (Talonbooks 2015). Their publisher’s website describes Rom Com as “an intelligent collection of poetry that both celebrates and capsizes the romantic comedy… These irreverent, playful, weird, and comedic poems come in a variety of forms, fully engaging in pop culture, without a judgmental tone.” Dina Del Bucchia holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia and her writing has appeared in literary publications across Canada. Daniel Zomparelli is editor-in-chief of Poetry Is Dead magazine and is the program coordinator for the Megaphone magazine Community Creative Writing Program
