Professional Development Day

This year, two renowned journalists, Stevie Cameron and William Marsden, join forces with literary agent Chris Bucci to discuss the process of transforming an idea into a book. This panel is an invaluable opportunity for student and emerging authors alike to engage with professionals in their field—the panel is open to the public and free of charge, and we welcome writers from all genres and levels of experience to participate.
Meet our panel participants:
Investigative reporter Stevie Cameron, author of six non-fiction books, former journalist with the Globe & Mail and Maclean’s magazine, is probably better known as the author of On the Take: Crime, Corruption and Greed in the Mulroney Years, the number one best-selling book in Canada in 1994 and 1995. Cameron’s latest book, On the Farm: Robert William Pickton and the Tragic Story of Vancouver’s Missing Women, deals with the Robert Pickton murder case. It took her eight years to complete.
William Marsden, assistant city editor at The (Montreal) Gazette and previously director of the paper’s investigative team, has won two National Newspapers Awards and conducted investigations on white-collar crime, organized crime and political corruption. His latest book, published in 2011 by Knopf Canada, is called Fools Rule: Inside the Failed Politics of Climate Change. In 2008, Marsden won a National Business Book Award for Stupid to the Last Drop: How Alberta is Bringing Environmental Armageddon to Canada (And Doesn’t Seem to Care).
Chris Bucci is a literary agent and Director of Anne McDermid & Associates, working with authors to develop book projects and proposals for the International market. Most recently as senior editor at McClelland & Stewart, he worked primarily with non-fiction, bringing to the M&S catalogue the likes of Alain de Botton, Christopher Hitchens, Paul Watson, Bob Rae and Sir Martin Gilbert. He began his career at the University of Toronto Press and soon became an acquisitions editor at the University of Toronto Press in social sciences and cultural studies. Bucci joined HarperCollins Canada in 2003 as a non-fiction editor. Moving to M&S in 2004, Bucci revitalized the McClelland & Stewart non-fiction program, establishing relationships with international authors, agents and publishers. He represents authors such as Linda McQuaig and Ken Finkleman.
